artwork by CutechuluHalf-Gem. Half-Viltromite. Born and raised in Queens. Selena built a name as a bounty hunter, then found something that belonged entirely to her inside a wrestling ring.
SELENA IS SOMEONE WHO IS DOMINANT, direct, and has no patience for people who can't keep up. She commands attention without asking for it, says exactly what she means, and expects the same back. People who are vague or wishy-washy on purpose, make excuses, or talk in circles irritate her more than anything. She respects strength and has little use for weakness, though she'll give time to someone inexperienced if she thinks there's something worth developing there.
She can be charming and she can be terrifying. Kael raised her on Viltromite discipline and she took to it completely. She carries her mother's gem in her chest and is still figuring out who she is and where she belongs.
Growing up in Queens only sharpened what was already there. Selena talks fast, gets to the point, and has no interest in dressing a simple answer up until nobody can recognize it. She will help somebody while complaining about how badly they handled the situation, argue without taking it personally, and move on the second the problem is settled.
Selena was born in Queens and never developed the habit of making herself smaller for anybody. New York taught her to move with purpose, speak clearly, mind her own business until somebody needs help, and never confuse kindness with softness.
She lives in Maspeth, where industrial streets, garages, warehouses, neighborhood restaurants, and easier access to space for her motorcycle suit her better than a polished high-rise ever would. Her accent is noticeable without being exaggerated in every sentence. It gets stronger when she is angry, tired, excited, or arguing with Kael.
KAEL CAME TO HOMEWORLD on Viltromite business. The mission was standard; assess the planet, assess the species, determine compatibility for conquest or population continuation. The Gems met him the way they met most outsiders, with hostility. He expected that. What he did not expect was Morganite.
She was the only one on Homeworld who approached him with curiosity instead of aggression. She asked him questions about where he came from, what he had seen, and what other worlds looked like. Kael had never met a Gem who cared about anything outside of Homeworld's rigid order. At first he considered her a useful contact and then a potential asset. The Gems were a strong species and a half-Viltromite offspring from such a pairing had value to the Empire. He told himself that was the reason he kept coming back to her. It was not the reason.
Morganite had spent her entire existence on Homeworld being told that nothing outside of it mattered. She did not believe that. She asked Kael everything and he answered everything, and somewhere in those conversations he stopped thinking about the mission and started thinking about her. He fell in love with her. She fell in love with him. Homeworld noticed and Homeworld did not approve.
Kael took her off Homeworld before that disapproval became something worse. They came to New York City, crowded enough for two outsiders to disappear and varied enough that Morganite could spend years finding something new every day. They settled in Queens. Kael found work, Morganite threw herself into Earth culture, and neither of them attracted much attention among millions of people already occupied with their own lives.
They married. They built a life. Morganite spent those years doing what she had always wanted to do; learning everything she could about Earth, humans, and the variety of life Homeworld had told her was beneath notice. They had decades together.
Then Morganite fell pregnant. Gem reproduction is unlike most species. A Gem cannot carry a child the way humans or Viltromites do without a significant cost. The pregnancy progressed over months the same way a human pregnancy would, giving them time to prepare, set up a space for Selena, and have the conversations they needed to have. But at the end of it a Gem has to give up their physical form entirely to bring the child into the world, passing their gem to the child. That is not a side effect. It is the requirement.
Morganite knew this going in. During those months she recorded videos addressed directly to Selena for different points in her life; her first birthday, her first day of school, the hard days, and the questions she might have about who her mother was and why she made the choice she made. She left Kael instructions on when to show Selena which ones. She did not want her daughter growing up without a version of her mother to talk to, even if it was only a screen.
Kael did not handle it well. He had known what the choice meant, tried to talk Morganite out of it, and she had made it anyway. Now she was gone and there was a baby who was the reason she was gone. He took care of Selena because she needed taking care of and because she was Morganite's, but it was a long time before it felt like anything other than obligation.
What changed it was the gem. He noticed the way it caught light the same way Morganite's had, and the way Selena watched everything with the same curiosity. Selena was not Morganite, but Morganite was in her, and Kael stopped being able to separate his grief from his love for his daughter because they were the same thing.
He raised her hard with Viltromite discipline, no shortcuts and no softening the training because she was small or young. He taught her to fight before she could read, pushed her endurance, and drilled her in combat until she stopped losing. He stayed close the way Morganite would have wanted him to, answered her questions, and showed her the videos at the times Morganite had marked.
Queens handled the rest of her education. Growing up half-Gem and half-Viltromite in New York meant Selena learned quickly to handle herself in situations most people her age never encountered. She started running recovery jobs with Kael in her mid-teens, tracking skips and doing contract work for bondsmen who paid well and did not ask questions about how a teenage girl could outrun and outfight men twice her size.
By nineteen she was working solo. By 21 she had a reputation in New York's bail enforcement circuit that made certain skips try very hard not to get caught by her specifically.
In her early twenties Selena walked into a wrestling school looking for people who could give her a better challenge. She expected the fighting to be easy. It was. Everything else was not. She had to learn timing, trust, control, how to take a hit without making someone look foolish, and how to protect another wrestler while making the audience believe she wanted to break them in half.
She kept coming back because it frustrated her. Eventually it became the first part of her life that did not begin with Kael, Morganite, the Gem Empire, or the Viltromite Empire. Prism Plex belonged to Selena.
She is 24 now. Wrestling has become her main career, bounty work is something she still takes when the job is worth it, and she plays rugby casually with a local women's club. Kael is still nearby and still showing up whether she asks him to or not. The Gem Empire considers her an aberration while the Viltromite Empire considers her an asset. Neither has moved on those opinions yet. Selena is still deciding what she considers herself.
Kael meets Morganite on Homeworld and takes her away when their relationship becomes dangerous.
Kael and Morganite settle in Queens, marry, and build a life together.
Selena is born with Morganite's gem. Morganite gives up her physical form to bring her into the world.
Kael raises Selena with strict Viltromite discipline while gradually learning how to be her father instead of only her trainer.
She starts joining Kael on recovery work and learns tracking, apprehension, and threat assessment in real situations.
Selena begins taking bounty jobs on her own.
Her reputation in New York's bail enforcement circuit is established.
She enters a wrestling school, expecting an easy challenge, and finds a craft that forces her to learn restraint and trust.
At 24, Selena wrestles professionally as Prism Plex, takes occasional bounty work, and plays casual club rugby.
Prism Plex is an intimidating powerhouse with a real combat background, a sharp mouth, and enough control to make other wrestlers trust her with their bodies. She does not need to shout to command a room. She looks directly into the camera, says exactly what she means, and leaves the audience waiting to see whether she can back it up.
Her style is built around grappling, throws, suplexes, controlled slams, counters, and sudden bursts of athleticism that do not look possible at her size. The challenge is never whether she can overpower somebody. The challenge is making the match fair, safe, and convincing.
Selena plays casually for a local women's rugby club. She originally joined because another wrestler invited her to practice and she wanted the conditioning. She stayed because the team gave her something she did not get from bounty work or one-on-one combat.
Rugby forces her to read the entire field, work with people she did not personally choose, and trust that somebody else will be where they are supposed to be. She keeps her strength within an agreed human range and treats every practice like another exercise in control.
She is not chasing a second professional career. She plays because she enjoys getting hit, enjoys the team, and likes having one part of her week where winning does not depend on her handling everything alone.
Superhuman strength, speed, and near invulnerability inherited from Kael. She can fly and heals faster than most species. Her physical baseline alone makes her a serious threat.
Her mother's gem in her chest lets her generate rose crystal formations across her body and summon a full crystal exosuit, her weapon of choice. The suit amplifies her physical output significantly.
Under extreme emotional duress it grows larger and denser, but she can only hold that state briefly before it drains her. The crystal is body-based only and does not project.
Involuntary on contact with soil or stone. She reads mineral composition and energy output whether she wants to or not.
Selena inherits extended lifespan from both sides. Viltromites live for thousands of years and age slower the older they get. Gems do not age or die naturally at all as long as their gem is intact.
Selena sits somewhere between the two. She will age and eventually die, but on a timescale significantly longer than even a full Viltromite. She ages extremely slowly and her physical peak will hold for a very long time.
The Viltromite who raised her alone after Morganite's death. He trained Selena hard, stayed close, and remains the person whose safety can break through nearly any restraint she has.
Morganite gave up her physical form to bring Selena into the world. Her gem lives in Selena's chest, and the message videos she left behind remain Selena's only direct connection to her.
They consider Selena an aberration. She considers their opinion unwanted and unfinished business.
They consider Selena a valuable asset. She has no intention of allowing an empire to decide what she exists for.
Selena does not disappear into an empty apartment and do nothing. Her home is loud, occupied, and usually slightly chaotic. Biscuit needs walking, Garnet is somewhere she should not be, Remy is moving at his own pace, and Fig and Newton have an enclosure Selena cares about far more than she admits.
She works on her motorcycle, puts on vinyl, bakes when she needs her hands busy, sketches gear ideas, watches reality TV, and answers Kael's messages several minutes after reading them so he does not think she was waiting.
SELENA ALWAYS HAS COFFEE before anything else in the morning, and bad coffee is one of the quickest ways to make that morning worse.
She talks to Biscuit like he understands every word. Most of the time she behaves as though his failure to answer is a personal choice.
She loves trashy reality television and will argue about it with the same seriousness she brings to combat strategy.
She collects knives, vinyl records, and information about planets she has never visited.
She bakes, but becomes defensive if anyone acts surprised by it.
She checks every exit when she enters a room, even when the room is a bakery, museum, or somebody's apartment.
Her accent gets stronger when she is angry, excited, exhausted, or talking to Kael.
She respects inexperienced people who work hard. She has no respect for people who use inexperience as an excuse not to try.
Because the people in the ring with her are coworkers, not enemies. Her real strength would make an ordinary match impossible and dangerous. Learning exact control is part of what made wrestling difficult enough to keep her interested.
Not in its combat form. She may use a thin decorative crystal layer for an entrance or special event, but it does not amplify her strength and cannot be used as armor.
Kael trained her for recovery work and she remains good at it, but wrestling became the first career Selena chose entirely for herself. She still accepts jobs when the money, target, or circumstances are worth her time.
Selena plays casually with a club that knows what she is. She limits her output, follows agreed safety rules, and treats practice as another exercise in control. She is not trying to build a professional rugby career or hide her biology from the team.
No. Her crystal formations and exosuit are body-based only.
A crack shuts down her crystal abilities and leaves her severely ill and weakened. Removing the gem places her in critical condition. Shattering it kills her. The gem is exceptionally hard to damage, so an attacker would need both the knowledge and the force to target it successfully.
Not in person. Morganite's physical form disappeared when Selena was born. Selena knows her through Kael's memories, her own inherited gem, and the message videos Morganite recorded during the pregnancy.
